For the second year running Melloul–Blamey was nominated for the Business Leader of the Year Award, at the annual Business Excellence Awards Dinner hosted by the Greater Kitchener Waterloo, Chamber of Commerce. This award is presented to an outstanding business with more than 20 full-time employees, that in the past year has: demonstrated innovative & proactive leadership within their industry, demonstrated measurable success as a business and/or as an employer, practiced good corporate citizenship, and made exceptional contributions by promoting community betterment. The nomination included many glowing examples of the above various criteria , leaving the Melloul–Blamey team members very proud of their company. A win in that category would have been icing on the 25th anniversary cake, for President Bernie Melloul, who founded the company on the very principles of the Chamber's Awards. At the Annual General Meeting, held at the theatre in the Coldwell–Banker, Peter Benninger Realty Building four employees were recognized for significant contributions made over the past year. The Spirit Award went to Pete Rodenburg for demonstrating a positive outlook to both the public and staff members. Pete was lauded as a quick learner who totally grasped the team player concept and went out of his way to share his positive outlook. The Safety Award is a recognition, highlighting the employee’s attention to all the details of a safe workplace. Ryan Beisel was awarded this plaque, which was described as the most important award of all because it meant workers would return home to their families safely, every night. The Corporate Image Award went to Dan de la Mothe. Dan was a double winner this year as he also took home the ‘Fishing Trip’ prize for his efforts at making this annual social event a ‘must attend’ for all concerned. His formal award for Corporate Image was presented for the great work he does at Customer Service. Dan’s job at following up at past job sites tidying up various deficiencies and making corrections and adjustments to various installations, was honoured this year, Customer complaints were way down and satisfaction was up. This in spite of having more customers than ever before. Mike Knischewsky received The President’s Award. This presentation is made at the discretion of the President, Bernie Melloul. Mr. Melloul described Mike as just the kind of outstanding employee and all round performer, with whom it is a pleasure to know and to work. Each of these awards came with a cash award and the hearty congratulations of everyone in attendance. An additional highlight was the recognition of two employees who have both served the full 25 years Melloul–Blamey has been in business. Founders Bernie Melloul and Dave Blamey surprised Paul Brubacher and Wayne Zinger with an all expenses paid trip to ‘somewhere warm.’ Both employees were encouraged to shop their travel agents and select a destination of their choice. Both men gave very meaningful thank you speeches, citing their great satisfaction of being able to work for such a caring company. 40 YEARS IN THE BIZ NOT ENOUGH – January 4, 2007 Long time employee Louyse Meyer determined that after 40 years in the construction business she would retire. In honour of her 23 years service with Melloul–Blamey, the founders, Bernie Melloul and Dave Blamey honoured “Lou” with a Gala party right in the parking lot of their Waterloo office. A tent was erected the caterers arrived, clients, staff, and Louyse’s friends and family were invited for an afternoon ‘and evening’ of toasts, reminiscing and tributes to her faithful service. Louyse and her husband Jim spent the summer of 2006 enjoying the sights of Easterm Canada, they spent lots of time at their trailer, she slept in, did her Christmas shopping early, and by January of ’07 she was ready for another job. Not wanting ready to resume her full time position in accounts payable, she agreed to re–join Melloul–Blamey as a part time receptionist. Many regular visitors to the office are happy to see her back in the business, and the staff act like she never left. Former US President in Kitchener. – November 8, 2006. Melloul–Blamey was in the thick of things on November 8th at Bingeman’s in Kitchener, as one of the sponsors for the “World Peace Begins at Home” luncheon. A capacity crowd of 1000 people paid $500 a plate to hear President Bill Clinton, speak. The former President was most engaging as he held the crowd spell–bound for an hour an twenty minutes. The event raised over $560,000 for a new addition to the Catholic Family Counsellings Centre building, for domestic violence. Clinton shared how he too was the product of a violent homelike at the hands of an alcoholic Step Father. Our own Senior Manager of Market Development, Neil Aitchison was the master of Ceremonies and was pleased to pose for a photo with Mr Clinton who shook hands of a number of the sponsors after his speech, including those at the Melloul–Blamey table. A day to remember! SUICIDE RUN – October 20, 2006 Melloul–Blamey’s Chief Financial Officer, Brian Denomme, completed the Toronto Marathon in memory of a good friend to raise awareness for male depression. Melloul–Blamey matched all staff donations to the cause. Their significant contributions helped raise over $10,000 for the family – more than twice their goal. Congratulations Brian. BERNIE MELLOUL HONOURED BY PEERS. – September 30, 2006 The Ontario General Contractors association honoured one of their own at a Gala Banquet held in Niagara on the Lake at the Queen’s Landing Hotel. OGCA President made the presentation and cited Bernie for his outstanding contributions to the education within the construction industry. Bernie has served the industry association in many capacities over the years and was totally surprised to receive the honour. LOCAL CELEBRITY JOINS MELLOUL–BLAMEY – September 5, 2006 Popular celebrity Neil Aitchison has joined the staff of the Waterloo based construction company, Mellou–Blamey. A former broadcast executive, on–air host, actor, and professional speaker Aitchison has been named Senior Manager of Market Development. He will handle Public Relations, ambassadorial work, sponsorships and will assist the partners in market relations, and customer presentations. Additionally Neil will conduct perception audits with past and present clients ensuring the performance of the company will only continue to improve. Clients can also avail themselves of Neil’s experience as a Master of Ceremonies for their official openings and media events. Neil can still be seen performing with The Drayton Entertainment group of theatres, on occasion, as well as hosting various community fundraisers and special events. Aitchison says, “It is very energizing working with the talented ‘young’ people at Melloul–Blamey, they have energy to burn”. KEYS TO HIGH SCHOOL 3 MONTHS EARLY – June 1 2006 General Superintendent Tim Henheoffer simply glows with pride and satisfaction being able to tell anyone who will listen how Melloul–Blamey was able to hand over the keys, for a new high school, to the Waterloo County School Board 3 months ahead of schedule. Teachers and administrators were ecstatic to be able to have the entire summer to move in and prepare without the hassle of everyone arriving at the same time. Huron Heights Secondary School in Kitchener is a sparkling new facility, and it is meeting with everyone’s approval. The athletic field, the parking lot and all interior aspects were completed to the satisfaction of all. Automatic comparisons were made of another school in the region, which was more than a year behind schedule. It was built by a Toronto firm. |
